• In Israel, religious schools get a boost - Los Angeles Times: He is one of tens of thousands of Israeli young men studying to master the Torah and the Talmud, cloistered at ultra-Orthodox schools that shield them from secular teachings that might shake their faith. In a defining battle over the Jewish state's identity, the yeshivas are resisting pressure from secular politicians and educators to teach the basic subjects required at all Israeli secondary schools. "They want to turn us into what they see as 'enlighte ned people of the world,' who will integrate into Israeli society," he said. "But we do not want to integrate into that society, because of its many temptations.&q uot; Haredi Jews, as the ultra-Orthodox are known here, won the latest skirmish. Parliament last month legalized state funding for high school-age boys' yeshivas while reclassifying them as "cultural ly unique" schools, exempt from the obligation to add on a basic secular curriculum.

The BBC's Erica Chernofsky in Jerusalem gets a rare insight into the lives of members of Israel's Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.: Haredim are 10% of Israeli society with a non positive reputation among secular Israelis, who view their customs as primitive and disapprove of their choice to study at seminaries and so avoid the mandatory army draft. Mrs Greenwald lives in a ultra-orthodox area. Everything is closed on the Sabbath and only kosher food is sold in shops. Like all, she dresses very modestly, covers her hair with a wig or scarf and will not allow physical contact of any kind with any man except her husband. "Being Haredi means being someone who fears God,"she says. "It means that first and foremost in life are the Torah and keeping the mitzvoth." ; "If I go on a trip with my family, I can't eat just anything, I can't go mixed swimming, and I'm constantly thinking 'what is the proper thing to do now?' As Haredim we don't just live, but with a purpose." She proudly supports her family while her husband pursues his religious studies
